Sustainability

As you've seen in the previous two pages fungi are a symbol of sustainability in almost every field, which continues proving that they are taking the lead in becoming the material of the future. But now we're about to explore something even more incredible

QUICKLY

Take a quick guess, what do you think tis part of the page is gonna be about?

Fungi eating plastic?

Now, let me tell you about a super powerful fungus, or more accurately, a genus of fungi, called Pleurotus. These fungi can perform a procces known as mycoremediation, which means transforming enviormental waste into new resources through decomposition.

In some scientific studies, researchers discovered that these organisms were able to take plastic and turn it into FOOD SAFE FOR HUMANS. Sounds crazy, right? But it’s real.

They do this by using enzymatic decomposition to break down the waste, eventually transforming it into oyster mushrooms, which are completely edible and safe for humans.

Glossary

mycoremediation:

(the incredible process where fungi transform pollution and waste into harmless and sometimes even useful resources.)

This is a discovery that could change the world as we know it because one of the biggest problems we face as a society today is the massive amount of pollution in the environment.

But this goes even further. Scientists have also discovered that these fungi are capable of breaking down oil, one of the main causes of marine life destruction.

Imagine an ocean without plastic, an environment free from oil spills, and cleaner cities. That is the future we could reach if we continue exploring the incredible world of fungi.
